Digestive Health and Sorbitol

Sorbitol in Sunsweet® Prune Juice Improves Digestive Health

Prune juice contains a high quantity of sorbitol which is believed to stimulate the digestive system and provide relief for individuals who suffer from constipation and bowel irregularity.

What is sorbitol?

Sorbitol is a low calorie sugar known as a sugar alcohol or polyol. It is found naturally in foods like prunes and apricots.  Sweetening and moisture retaining properties have led to it being used as an ingredient in chewing gum, sugar-free sweets and some medicines.

What are the benefits of sorbitol?

  • Low Glycaemic Index, hence useful for people with diabetes
  • Does not promote tooth decay or dental caries
  • Low caloric value
  • Laxative properties help relieve constipation
  • Acts as a prebiotic, which promotes the production of good bacteria in the gut
  • Produces stools of a ‘good’ consistency to help leave the body easily, which can help prevent against colon cancer and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

How does sorbitol relieve the digestive system?

Sorbitol acts as a laxative by being absorbed very slowly into the blood.  On account of this slow absorption sorbitol soaks up some water as it passes through the gut. This increases the moisture content of the stools which leads to easier passage from the body.

Although sorbitol rarely causes negative side effects, ingesting a large amount can cause abdominal discomfort, flatulence, diarrhoea, a need ‘to go’, and nausea.

Sunsweet® Prune Juice made from the best quality plums in California is a rich source of sorbitol and natural fibre, both of which promote digestive health.
